As European tourism faces increasingly intense extreme weather events, natural hazards and cascading disruptions to transport, energy and food supply systems, traditional crisis management models are no longer sufficient. The Horizon MYRIAD-EU-funded project, of which HOTREC is a part, demonstrates how destinations can move from a single-hazard mindset to a systemic, future-oriented approach to risk and resilience.
The recommendations are fully aligned with the EU Strategy on Climate Change Adaptation, the European Green Deal and ongoing work on disaster risk management, and include:
- Making multiple risk modeling mandatory for major investments in tourism, to capture the direct, indirect and cascading impact.
- Integrating the MYRIAD-EU six-step framework in destination master plans and annual public policy cycles, to strengthen long-term resilience.
- Strengthening public-private collaboration, including incentives such as reduced insurance premiums or subsidies for hazard-resilient infrastructure.
- Investing in observatories and transparent dashboards for monitoring risks and resilience indicators in real time.
- Expanding successful pilot projects across Europe, through exchange of experience and coordinated implementation.
